Understanding the UK Marriage Visitor Visa in 2025

If you intend to stay back in the UK after marriage with your partner and work or engage in other activities, your best option will be the UK spouse visa instead of the UK marriage visitor visa.

With this visa, you can only get married, form a civil partnership, or give legal notice of either. You can give your notice at a designated registry office, and can get married or form a civil partnership at a venue that is legally licensed to perform such ceremonies.

The UK Marriage Visitor visa holders are not allowed to work or engage in any form of employment or business, they cannot claim public funds or benefits, they cannot live in the UK for an extended period, they cannot extend the visa or switch to another visa type, and they cannot bring dependents along with them.

Although they are allowed to study for at least 30 days, however, that should not be the primary reason for visiting. These limitations are warnings not to apply for this visa if you intend to do any of the activities forbidden with this visa.

An alternative to consider is the UK Fiancé Visa, which allows the applicant to switch to a Spouse Visa after marriage or civil partnership so that they can remain in the UK.

Essential Requirements for the UK Marriage Visitor Visa

To apply for the UK marriage visitor visa, you need to meet personal and relationship requirements. For personal requirements, you need a valid passport for the duration of your stay, and you also need to prove that you share a genuine relationship with and plan to marry your UK partner.

You also need to show the strong ties you have to your home to convince the immigration authorities that you intend to leave the UK after the marriage/civil partnership.

You need to present bank statements or any other acceptable financial proof to show that you can support yourself throughout your stay without relying on public funds.

The financial proof is further important to prove that you will not need to take up employment or engage in business throughout your stay.

Furthermore, your immigration history and criminal record check have to show that you’ve never been deported, prevented from entering the UK, or committed any crime.

For relationship requirements, you need to prove that the relationship is genuine and subsisting. You can show evidence of shared activities and communication, such as bills, tenancy agreements, communication records, and photographs.

You must prove that you are free to marry or form a civil partnership with your partner either by showing that you are single, have completely divorced from your previous partner or that you are a widow/widower (have a death certificate to prove the death of your previous spouse).

Your partner in the UK must be a British citizen, a permanent resident or have permission to be in the UK.

The list of documents you need to apply for the UK Marriage Visitor Visa include passport, proof of funds, photographs, evidence of intention to leave, communication records, photos of time together, statements from family/friends, registrar appointments, confirmation of venue booking, your partner’s passport copy and proof of immigration status.

After uploading the documents, you have to pay a standard application fee of 127 pounds, and priority service fee of 500 pounds (this is optional and only available in certain locations).

According to the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), the processing time for this visa type is 3 weeks, however, certain factors can make some applications take longer.

What are the Financial Costs Involved in Applying for the UK Marriage Visitor Visa?
