Engrams are permanent memories stored in your brain. Much like a computer, every time you record an event and store it as a memory, the engram of that event is created. Engrams can be temporarily bypassed by utilizing short term memory (where they remain until the short term memory degrades or is replaced with another thought), but in general engrams take much longer to degrade than to form in the first place.
As engrams are formed, they associate themselves with other engrams in your memory. The more that an engram is used in association with formed memories, the stronger that it becomes. For instance, when you see a dog and have a knee jerk reaction to pet it based on your memory of when you were bitten as a child, the engram that represents being bitten by a dog is triggered much stronger than any other associated engrams. How to open your first Umbral Engrams
To open your first Umbral Engram you will need to have completed the Praetor Defense Mission. This mission kicks off with a visit by Broo Tarquin after completing the quest The Empty Throne. Once this is done, go back to Tarquin and he will inform you that they have managed to capture some Shadow Creatures alive after being overwhelmed by them. He will then ask you to escort him to the cells.
The Shadow Creatures Broo Tarquin has captured are fairly simple, and use a mixture of melee attacks (both single target and small area) as well as several shadow based abilities that each do something different. When they die, they simply turn into smoke but leave behind a small pile of glowing ash that can be harvested for Umbral Crystal and Shadow Ore.
Tarquin will fight with you as you make your way through the cells (he is required to go with you as he has captured all the creatures), but once you reach the final cell at the end of this path, he leaves and goes back to his original position. It’s this final cell that you are interested in, as inside awaits the first Umbral Engram!
Umbral Engram – Memory of Battle
This engram represents Tarquin’s memory of being overwhelmed by his attackers, and so can be gained after completing The Empty Throne quest. Once unlocked it will allow you to craft Umbral weapons and armour. It also unlocks the ability to use Umbral mods on your weapons and armour.

Umbral engrams are the most powerful intrinsic weapons and armor that you can obtain in Destiny 2.
