Wayne Gretzky doesn’t consider himself an athlete at all. But when he says this you have the sense that he is being modest and perhaps a little ironic too. He knows that in most people’s minds there is no one who has dominated their sport like he has dominat- ed hockey. He knows that as far as athletes go, there is no one who comes close to his breadth of talent and the magnitude of his accomplishments. And so, Wayne Gretzky is perhaps the greatest athlete ever to lace up a pair of skates. There are still some who maintain that Gretzky couldn’t have achieved what he did if the NHL had developed later.
How many points did Wayne Gretzky have
That is, of course, the problem with making comparisons. Gretzky has such a rare and unusual collection of skills that it’s difficult to imagine anyone before him having them all. From the time he scored 378 goals in 79 games as a 14-year-old in peewee hockey, Gretzky had an uncanny sense of the ice, where he was in relation to his team-mates and where his opponents were. But even at 16 Gretzky’s talents didn’t go unnoticed by professional scouts. When he scored 229 points in a season and led the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds to their first OHL championship.
Wayne Gretzky is the best hockey player of all time
Gretzky was not a particularly fast skater, but he knew that too and had no trouble compensating, getting to where the puck was going before anyone else. Also unusual for such a large man (he’s 6’0″, 200 pounds) Gretzky is extremely agile and changes direction with remarkable speed and grace. He’s also an astonishing stickhandler, with a hand-eye co-ordination and feel for the puck that made him even more dangerous. But perhaps most impressive of all is Gretzky’s hockey sense.
He holds dozens of records, including most goals and points scored
Wayne Gretzky is considered hockey’s greatest player, and was the top scorer in the history of the game until he retired from playing in 1999. He scored a record 894 goals during his career. Wayne Gretzky is widely acknowledged as one of the best – if not “the” best – ice hockey players of all time. With a playmaking ability, vision and scoring touch greater than those of any other player in the history of the game, he is again generally considered the best player of his era.
He was a dominant force in the NHL for over two decades
Spending his first 18 seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, later joining the Los Angeles Kings for five years and finally returning home to play three seasons with the New York Rangers. Gretzky’s teams won nine Stanley Cup championships during his career. In addition to being a record-breaking player, Gretzky also found his gret on the business side of the sport. He was one of the first hockey players to have a sponsorship deal and he wore a jersey with a corporate logo.
Gretzky’s skills and abilities have never been matched
He is a once-in-a-generation athlete who was bigger, faster and more skilled than any hockey player before him or since. There have been players who have come close to Gretzky’s accomplishments, but no one has been able to match his combination of excellence in all the major types of hockey skills. He is also quite well known for his appearance in several films, and made cameo appearances on television sitcoms and dramas such as although Gretzky did not officially retire from the NHL until 1999.
He is considered by many to be the greatest athlete ever although
Many believe that this title was held by Muhammad Ali before his death. Another argument is that sports are not the only challenge to be measured, and that Gretzky’s profession as a hockey player should not come into play when determining whether or not he is better than Ali or who has had the greatest impact on society.
