This summer, the Milwaukee Bucks won their first NBA championship in 50 years, and they were ecstatic. The appointment of Lisa Byington as the team’s full-time play-by-play announcer, on the other hand, is a historic decision that is every bit as significant as winning a title.
This season, Giannis Antetokounmpo and company will attempt to go back-to-back. Byington will be there for the whole journey, which is a huge step forward for women in sports.
Lisa Byington’s appointment by the Bucks has significant ramifications.

When Lisa Byington dons the headset this autumn, she will create history.
Byington will be the Bucks’ new play-by-play announcer for games broadcast on Bally Sports Wisconsin, the team announced Wednesday. She takes over for Jim Paschke, who will retire after 35 years of calling Bucks games at the end of the 2020-21 season.
Byington becomes the first female full-time play-by-play announcer for a major men’s professional sports franchise with that announcement. She accepted the job with humility, praising Paschke for his efforts and expressing pleasure in succeeding the legendary play-by-play announcer.
Byington told ESPN, “I realize I’ll be stepping into a position long occupied by Jim Paschke, and I respect his love for the club and the great events his voice will always be a part of.” “I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank him for his dedication to the brand, and it’s an honor for me to take the reins from him. I’m very thrilled to work with Marques Johnson, Zora Stephenson, Steve Novak, and everyone else at Bally Sports Wisconsin that is involved with Bucks games.”
Peter Feignin, the team’s president, expressed delight at Byington’s appointment, saying that her “extensive” experience in television made her the “ideal candidate” to succeed Paschke.
Indeed, Byington is very knowledgeable about sports. She’s also no stranger to historic events.
Earlier this year, Byington made history.
Byington will make history for the second time in the last few months this autumn.
As part of the CBS-Turner Sports split coverage, Byington became the first woman to call NCAA men’s basketball games this past March. She also called several important games, like Abilene Christian’s victory over Texas and Oral Roberts’ win against Florida, which advanced the Golden Eagles to the Sweet 16.
The Michigan native put forth a lot of effort to get to this point. According to her website, Byington began her career at a small television station in Alpena, Michigan, before moving to Lansing for the greater part of a decade. Her national prominence was raised as a result of her long run.
Since then, Byington has featured on a number of networks. She was the play-by-play announcer for the 2019 Women’s World Cup on Fox and covered the Tokyo Olympics for NBC Sports. Byington was the first female play-by-play announcer for a Big Ten Network college football game in 2017, before making history during March Madness.
Byington now works full-time in Milwaukee. She continues to raise the bar for women in sports journalism. Will she see the Bucks win another championship?

The Bucks are attempting to become the first team to win back-to-back championships since the Golden State Warriors did it in 2018. They’ll have a decent probability of succeeding.
Milwaukee’s complete starting five returns next season, with Donte DiVincenzo returning after an injury that kept him out of the playoffs for almost the whole season. The Bucks also re-signed Bobby Portis, who was instrumental in the team’s championship run.
If the Brooklyn Nets can remain healthy, they should be a danger. Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry, and Bam Adebayo lead a Miami Heat squad that may compete for their second Eastern Conference championship in three seasons. Depending on how the Ben Simmons scenario plays out, the Philadelphia 76ers may be in the mix. Of course, the Western Conference will provide a slew of challenges.
Nonetheless, the Bucks have a good chance of repeating. Lisa Byington, who continues to be a pioneer in the business, will name the whole trip.
