With all due respect to Kobe’s old teammates, it’s understandable that a potential NBA great might eclipse the rest of the team. But it wasn’t the only way he exuded self-assurance on the court.

In a 2008 Sports Illustrated article, Chris Ballard said, “It’s 1989, and Bryant is 11 years old and living in Italy, where his father, Joe, is playing professional basketball.” “One day, Kobe approaches Brian Shaw, a Boston Celtics first-round selection who is now playing in Rome due to a contract dispute.”

While the two never played that game together, they did ultimately get together for a round of HORSE. Despite the change of plans, Kobe remained focused on the goal.

When you think of the LA Lakers player, his tremendous skill is perhaps the first thing that comes to mind. While we don’t know precisely what occurred in the HORSE game, the fact that we don’t know for sure that Shaw won indicates that Kobe at least held his own. While taking trick shots isn’t the same as playing a regular basketball game, going shot-for-shot with an NBA player requires some serious talents.

Aside from his basketball skills, Bryant is most known for his “Mamba Mentality,” which came down to a desire to push himself to the limit in the quest of achievement. While challenging a professional player to a one-on-one match isn’t exactly the same as studying the referee’s rule book or pumping iron in the gym, it does show Kobe’s desire to take on any challenge in his quest for the top position.

While there is likely some nostalgia at play owing to his sad passing, Kobe Bryant is remembered as a fierce competitor who battled with every fiber of his being to be the greatest in contemporary basketball history. Drive seemed to be an inextricable element of his personality even when he was 11 years old.
