‘When You’re Coming off the Bench, You’re Playing Against Backups’

When it comes to the NBA, there are few things certain in life. The best players will always be playing nightly because of their elite skill-set and work ethic. Even if one player is injured or cut from a team, he’ll have another job waiting for him elsewhere at any time during his career. However, what happens if the gap between starters and backups becomes too vast? When you’re coming off the bench, you’re playing against backups who lack your experience but could potentially beat you by simply being more consistent than other benches would offer..

On Tuesday, the Miami Heat took advantage of playing in front of a national audience by defeating the Dallas Mavericks 125-110. Four players scored in double figures, with Tyler Herro, a third-year guard, leading the way with 25 points off the bench. TNT pundits Charles Barkley is a professional basketball player. and Kenny Smith are dubious of Herro’s increasingly high potential, despite the fact that his performance is nothing new given the season he’s had.

Tyler Herro’s strong start is continuing.

Shaquille O’Neal agreed with Herro and compared him to Doncic and Young before of Tuesday’s game against the Mavericks. Tyler had made Shaq look good at halftime, scoring a team-high 17 points. For what it’s worth, Doncic had 19 points at halftime and ended with 33.

Herro was the major topic of TNT’s halftime program. Rather than Shaq lavishing additional accolades, Barkley and Smith were the ones that brought Herro Nation down to earth.

On the show, Smith added, “You’re talking about Tyler Herro comparing himself to Luka and Trae.” “There is a distinguishing factor. He can score, but there’s a distinction to be made between leading a team and carrying one.”

Barkley concurred with Smith, stating that he loves Herro but sees a distinction between him and a franchise focal point like Luka.

“Every night, those guys [Doncic and Young] have to carry a team.” [Herro] is up against the backups. You’re playing against backups when you come off the bench. Herro is a terrific little player, don’t get me wrong. However, claiming that you are capable of leading a squad every night is a different mindset.”

Chuck also hit back at Shaq, alleging that if Herro and Trae Young swapped teams, Herro would put up identical statistics, asking the big man, “Would the [Atlanta Hawks] have made it to the Eastern Conference Finals with him instead of Trae?” “No way.”

Herro gets a lot of playing time with the Miami Heat.

Herro is not a starter, as Barkley and Smith correctly point out. In three seasons, the 6-foot-5 shooter has only made 23 regular-season starts, none of which have come this season. He is, however, just as crucial to the Heat’s success as any of their five “starters.”

Herro isn’t expected to lead the team. Jimmy Butler has been assigned with this responsibility, and he’s already building a case for league MVP. However, the 21-year-old is still playing over 31 minutes per game, putting him on par with Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Kyle Lowry as a cornerstone. Down the stretch, head coach Erik Spoelstra is likely to turn to Herro. That was definitely the case in the fourth quarter against Dallas, as the third-year guard played all 12 minutes.

It’s impossible to say how Herro would do in Doncic’s or Young’s absences in Dallas or Atlanta. But we all know how important he is to the Miami Heat’s success.
