As a freshman, he averaged 13.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 7.6 assists per game. Those statistics only got better during Kidd’s sophomore season, when he was named to the First-Team All-American team.
The guard joined the NBA draft in 1994 as a result of his achievements. He was selected second overall by the Dallas Mavericks, setting up an ill-fated encounter with Gary Payton.

Kidd joined the NBA as a big-name rookie thanks to his collegiate accomplishments and draft ranking. Gary Payton, on the other hand, didn’t seem to care about anyone’s reputation.
Kidd was raised in California and was acquainted with The Glove, as he revealed in a Player’s Tribune article. A college-aged Payton had also given the young guard some guidance, laying the scene for the Mavs rookie to make a statement.
“When I initially came to the NBA, we played in a game in Seattle my rookie year. We weren’t actually buddies, but he remembered me from way back when. Then I was in the game, protecting him. I was bursting at the seams with vitality. He drove by me to lay it in one play, and I caught up with him. Kidd wrote, “I stopped his shot out of bounds.” “It was a pleasant experience. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I turned around and screamed at Gary. ‘Get that s— out of here,’ I said.
For those who are unaware, Payton is capable of delivering some nasty trash talk when the occasion demands it. On this occasion, though, he decided to let his game speak for itself.
“As soon as I said it, I realized it was a mistake. Kidd said, “It wasn’t my style.” “Gary scored the next 11 points while working on me from the post, moving in quiet. From the bench, our assistant coach grabbed my attention. He was shaking his head, as if to say, ‘Don’t you know you shouldn’t get him going?’
Payton scored 28 points en route to a 103-101 win if we believe Kidd trash-talked The Glove on his first trip to Seattle — he wasn’t sure when it occurred in his rookie year.
Kidd’s experience on that tragic night seems to be a humbling one when seen in isolation. The young guard, on the other hand, walked away with a good lesson.
In his Players’ Tribune article, the guard said, “I doubt he’d remember that game, but I’ll always cherish what I got away from it.” “It took a few years, but I improved my emotional control in games. After that, I didn’t engage in much trash talk. For some men, like Gary, it’s a strength, but it wasn’t for me. It’s true, you know — even at the NBA level, basketball is first and foremost a mind game.”
Of course, Jason Kidd went on to have a successful NBA career.

While it’s difficult to say what would have occurred if Kidd hadn’t learned that lesson, he did have a successful NBA career. The guard played in the NBA for 19 seasons, averaging 12.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game. He also won one championship, five times led the league in assists, and was named to ten All-Star teams.
Kidd has gone to the bench these days, where he can theoretically exercise the emotional control he acquired from Payton. Before joining the Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching staff, the former guard served as the head coach of both the Brooklyn Nets and the Milwaukee Bucks. He’ll return to the top position on the bench for the 2021-22 NBA season, taking control of the Mavericks.
Kidd began his NBA career in Dallas many years ago, when he learnt an important lesson after trash-talking Gary Payton. Now, almost 30 years later, he’ll return to Dallas as a coach and utilize his basketball experience to help the Mavs progress.
